The Disney Planes Event was a fun filled day with all things Planes! We even got to interview Teri Hatcher, voice of Dottie the mechanic from Planes! Unfortunately Terri was not feeling well and could not be there in person, so she did a phone interview with us. She was so sweet and kept apologizing to us for not being able to be there.
What I love about voice animation so much is that you can play with the material! The whole experience is just so fun! – Teri Hatcher
Teri Hatcher Planes Interview
What do you like about your character Dottie from Planes?
I love that Dottie is tough, smart, capable and caring. She is an important piece in the puzzle for Dusty to go out and reach for his dreams. Part of her wants to support him in his journey, and part of her wants to protect him.
What is like voicing Dottie compared being in a tv show or film?
They wanted me to be real. They wanted an authenticity in my voice. So for Dottie, I am trying to be as authentic, persuasive, empathetic and emotional as I would if I was filming in person. The divergence is that I could show up not in hair and makeup and not worrying about any physicality and just be relaxed with my voice. I tried to tell the story with my voice.
How do you find a balance between work and being a mom?
It is not that easy. As moms we seem to give and give and give. We kind of keep going. But I feel blessed, and at the end of the day you gotta find the joy in life.
What is your favorite thing about Planes?
The movie is just so gorgeous and beautiful. I kept trying to figure out how they created a world that just draws you in. My favorite scene with Dottie is when she tells Dusty that he cannot fly and does a demonstration of how he is going to go down and crash.
What was it like being offered a Disney movie?
Getting offered a Disney movie, one of your first thoughts is thinking, my child is going to love this, or my grandchild is going to love this. Or even my great grandchild when I am long gone is going to love this. That is the quality that Disney offers. I feel like kids even 50 years from now will still be entertained by Planes with their families. That is pretty fun! Voicing Dottie is a great way to be a little part of a movie that is going to bring joy to families all over the world.
John Lasseter is just brilliant, being a part of something that he is putting forth, and being able to work with Klay Hall, it was just amazing. I am really proud to be a part of it.
Disney’s Planes races into theaters on August, 9th!
Disney provided me with an all expense trip to learn about Planes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
