Frankenweenie Movie Night Fun Pack and Review

January 20, 2013 by Lauren 18 Comments

Frankenweenie dvd

The iconic director Tim Burton has created yet another in along line of masterpieces with the instant classic Frankenweenie, now out on  Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy.   The film is a classic boy and his dog tail with a twist.  Life was perfect for Victor and his dog Sparky they collaborated on nearly everything together including a film that in the opening sequence of the movie defines everything I love about film.  Well as you might expect in a movie that has lead characters with the last name Frankenstine an unfortunate accident of canine exuberance makes it necessary for Victor to reanimate the corpse of his beloved Sparky.  The high jinx ensue when it dawns on Victor that the rest of his family and friends might find his dark secret more than a little odd.

The film was shot in black and white in London where the director now resides.  What the film lacks in color it more than makes up for in rich lighting contrasts sometimes referred to as Chiaroscuro lighting.  You can see in certains scenes and lighting situations a yellow glow which adds some warmth to the black and white. Frankenweenie is also shot in stop motion which has a rich cinematic tradition despite the fact that it is rapidly becoming a dieing  art.  My family loved watching the special features included on the blue ray that go behind the scenes to show how all the artists and designers built this world that magically comes to life on screen.  Also included here is the original short that marks Burton’s first live action directing experience way back in the 1980’s.  It has probably been twenty years since I had seen it and I was shocked at how much of the little details that were in this original were also included in the new and expanded film.  Here is a clip of the original short that can also be found in the Frankenweenie blu-ray.

“Frankenweenie” features an all-star cast including the voices of Emmy Award®-winner Catherine O’Hara, Tony Award®-winner Martin Short, Academy Award®-winner Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Golden Globe®-winner Winona Ryder.

The great thing about watching a movie at home is checking out all the behind the scenes bonus features!   And with the Fun Pack below that includes a step-by-step guide on how to draw Sparky, printable character masks as well as Pin the Tail on Sparky and Frankenweenie Memory games, you will be an expert at all things Frankenweenie.

We finally watched it over the weekend. I laughed at my son, though, because it kind of scared him a bit. And he doesn’t usually get scared too easily. I mean he has read the Goosebump books for several years. 🙂
