DIY DwellStudio Owl Frame Knockoff

December 20, 2011 by Lauren 25 Comments

DwellStudio Owl Frame Knock Off
One of my favorite places to window shop, well online browse, is DwellStudio. I love to flip through their online catalog, and drool over their modern, clothes, bedding, toys and decor for kids. While flipping through their catalog, I found the cutest owl frame that would look perfect in Baybah’s bedroom. But there were two problems, the price ($40) and the frame is on backorder until February 2012.

My inspiration!!

I really wanted to make something special for Baybah for the Holidays, so I thought why not recreate the owl frame myself.  Knowing that I needed some supplies for my creation, Hubs and I headed to Walmart to pick them up and finish Christmas shopping. When I got home I could not wait to get started on the frame.

Materials Needed:

Bi-Fold Foam Board, X-ACTO Designer Series Precision Tip Scissors, pencil, printer paper, scrap book paper, CraftBond Dual-tip Flexible Pen, X-ACTO Zero Centering Ruler, X-ACTO Designer Series Gripster Craft Knife, X-ACTO Basic Shapes Template, Tape

Here are the steps to create your own DIY DwellStudio Owl Frame Knockoff!
1.  Fold a piece of printer paper in half.  Draw half of the owl large on the sheet of paper so that when you open it up the owl is symmetrical.
2. Cut out the owl.
3.  Use the X-ACTO Zero Centering Ruler to help you find the proper placement for your photo.  Make the square about 1/4 in or more smaller than your photo so the picture does not fall through.
4.  Trace your owl patter on the Bi-Fold Foam Board, and then cut it out with the X-ACTO Designer Series Gripster.
5.  Next, use the X-ACTO Basic Shapes template to help you cut out the circles for the eyes.  Use a piece of scrap to create the beak.
6.  Put them on your frame to make sure the sizes are correct.
7.  Now it is time to glue on the paper.
8.  Use a CraftBond Dual-tip Flexible Pen to add glue onto the front of your owl shape.
9.  Turn it over, and smooth out the paper.
10.  Turn it back over, and use your X-ACTO Designer Series Gripster to cut off the excess paper.  *Make sure the glue is dry before you do this.
11.  Use the CraftBond Dual-tip Flexible Pen to glue on the pieces.
12.  For the back of your frame, make a rectangle with the Bi-Fold Foam Board that is larger than the one you cut out.  Put a thin line of glue using the thin tip of the CraftBond Dual-tip Flexible Pen on each side and bottom.  Let it dry.
13.  Cut out another rectangle using the Bi-Fold Foam Board that you can tape to the back of your frame as the stand that holds it up.
14.  You are done!  This DIY DwellStudio Owl Frame cost less than $5 to make!!
