The Hundred Foot Journey Combines Food, Cultures, and Love

August 7, 2014 by Lauren 19 Comments

Thanks to Disney/DreamWorks I was able to see an early screening of the film and take part in the #100FootJourneyEvent.  However, opinions are my own.

This summer, feast your eyes on a film that will tug at your heartstrings and make your taste buds dance, DreamWorks The Hundred Foot Journey based on the novel “The Hundred-Foot Journey” by Richard C. Morais.  It is directed by Academy Award®-nominee Lasse Hallström and stars Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon, and is produced by Academy Award-winner Steven Spielberg, Academy Award-nominee Oprah Winfrey and Juliet Blake.

The Hundred Foot Journey Movie Review #100FootJourneyEvent

In The Hundred Foot Journey, Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal), budding chef, and his family leave their beloved country India after a tragic accident looking for a new beginning.  On their journey to find the perfect place, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), stumble upon a quaint village in the south of France called Saint-Antonin.   Papa thinks that this beautiful French town is the perfect place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant with Hassan as the head chef.

Madame Mallory (Academy Award® winner Helen Mirren) has other plans for the Kadam family.  You see, they opened their restaurant just 100 feet from her Michelin-starred classic French restaurant.  She does everything in her power to give them anything but a warm welcome and even tries to shut them down.   Papa fights back just as hard because he believes in Hassan and his cooking.   A feud breaks out between this very proper French restaurant that plays classical music and the loud Bollywood music playing, colorful and lively Indian restaurant.

Meanwhile, Hassan falls in love with French cuisine thanks to Madame Mallory’s sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) all the while their friendship grows.    When Hassan attempts French cuisine for the first time for Marguerite, it is then that she realizes the magnitude of his talent in the kitchen.  He goes on to use his knowledge of Indian food by combining it with classic French recipes bridging the two cultures with food.

Does Madame Mallory learn about Hassan’s special gift?  You need to watch the film to find out!

The Hundred Foot Journey Movie Review #100FootJourneyEvent

The witty banter between Helen Mirren and Om Puri was one of the things that I liked best about the film.  They have great onscreen chemistry even though they are adversary’s.  You could also tell the connection between Manish Dayel and Om Puri.  Steven Spielberg said, “Manish has a beautiful, calm, steady presence. He doesn’t look like, but very much is, Om’s son. There is something on camera and off that really bonded these two actors.”

The Hundred Foot Journey is a beautiful film that combines food, cultures, and love and is the perfect date night movie.

I read somewhere that the food is like a character in itself. I didn’t realize there was a love angle too. I am really looking forward to this now!

My husband and I are going to see the movie tonight for a date. The book it’s based on is terrific, too. (The movie is just a part of the book.) And Helen Mirren is one of my idols.
