While we were in San Francisco for the Inside Out Event, I fell in love with a short called LAVA. Let me set the stage for you. We walked into the theater at Pixar Animation Studios to watch an early screening of Pixars short LAVA and Inside Out. Since Lava is in front of Inside Out, Lava’s Director James Murphy & Producer Andrea Warren came out first to introduce us to their short.
Director James Warren started by telling us that this short was inspired by a vacation that he had in Hawaii. While there, he fell in love with its beauty and Hawaiian music, especially the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole. He said that since the song is so different than the original, it was like hearing it for the first time.
If you have never heard this song before, you have to listen to it below, it is beautiful.
With the inspiration from the sights and sounds of Hawaii, he came up with a love story about a lonely volcano who is searching for his one true love.
As James continued telling us about LAVA, he pulled out a ukelele from behind a chair and started singing. Right then, even before seeing it, I knew I was going to love this short.
“I have a dream, I hope will come true. You’re here with me and I’m here with you. I wish that the earth, sea, the sky up above, will send me someone to lava.”
Then they introduced us to LAVA.
Lava is a beautiful musical love story that will send you someone to LAVA!
