Your kids will love helping you make these fun and delicious Homemade Candy Corn Pop Tarts!  These are a perfect treat for school Halloween parties or a special breakfast on Halloween day.  Get creative and add your favorite filling.  I used blackberry jelly, but you could also use Nutella, your favorite flavor of jelly or jam, fresh fruit, and more. The possibilities are endless. I hope your family enjoys these homemade pop tarts as much as mind did.

Homemade Candy Pop Tarts
Author: Lauren
Recipe type: Breakfast or Dessert
Cook time:  25 mins
Total time:  25 mins

Ingredients
  • Ready to Bake Rolled Pie Crust (I used Pillsbury. Find it in the refrigerated section)
  • Jelly (Your favorite flavor. I used seedless blackberry)
  • Vanilla Frosting (I used Pillsbury Creamy Supreme Vanilla)
  • Red and Yellow Gel Food Coloring
  • Piping Bag or Sandwich Bag
  • Wilton Candy Corn Cookie Cutter
Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Unroll one pie crust and place on a floured surface.
  3. Use your cookie cutter to cut 12 candy corn shapes from the pie crust dough. This can easily be freehanded with a sharp knife or pizza cutter as well..
  4. Place six of the pie crust cutouts on a cookie sheet or baking stone.
  5. Spoon a small amount of jelly into the center of the pie crust as shown. Be sure to keep the filling away from the pastry edges so your pop tarts don't leak in the oven.
  6. Place your remaining pie crust candy corn pieces on top of the jelly.
  7. Use the tines of a fork to seal the edges of each pop tart.
  8. Prick the top of your tarts with the fork tines. You need to do this so that the steam can escape and you don't end up with big puffy pastries.
  9. Bake your pop tarts in a 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes or until slightly brown.
  10. Allow your pastries to cool completely.
  11. Fill a piping bag or sandwich bag with vanilla frosting.
  12. Cut a small hole in one end of the bag and use it to pipe the white portion of your candy corn.
  13. Once all pop tarts have been decorated with the white icing, place a small dab of yellow food coloring in your piping bag.
  14. While covering the hole you cut, work the icing and food coloring together until you have the desired yellow color.
  15. Pipe the yellow portion of your candy corn.
  16. Once all pop tarts have been decorated with the yellow icing, place a small dab of red food coloring in your piping bag.
  17. While covering the hole you cut, work the icing and food coloring together until you have the desired orange color.
  18. Pipe the orange portion of your candy corn.

Wow, what a tasty looking breakfast idea for this time of year. I’m sure kids will love this. It looks super easy to make. I think the hardest part will be choosing the what type of filling to use. Maybe I’ll start simple and try blueberries.

I have never made my own pop tarts. This recipe sure beats paying the high store prices of them!

I’ve always wanted to make my own pop tarts because I don’t care for the filing in the original ones. I’ll definitely have to give these a try.
